Despite his recent departure from the team, there is little
doubt that Lambert was the key signing in our move up the ladder to the premier
league. There was probably not a better
striker in the world who would have signed for Southampton as a League One team
with minus ten points. And there was
certainly no other striker a League One team could have signed who would still
be starting for that team in the BPL just three years later. Of course, I was not yet following
Southampton FC at that time so I could be wrong.
Rickie is not playing much now for Liverpool or for
England. It seems pretty clear that
however much Brendan Rodgers and Roy Hodgson disagree about other things such as
appropriate training regimens and football style, they are on the same page
when it comes to having no clue as to how to use Lambert to get the most out of
him. In any case, when Rickie’s career
comes to its inevitable premature conclusion at Liverpool, I hope he will
return to Southampton in some capacity—even if just as a fan—and that he will
be welcomed back when he does.
By the way, in researching this item (and others) I came across
this post on the Saintsweb forum. I
thought I should also give credit to its author for his perceptiveness and
lucky guessing.
Hey Rudy. I love your expert analysis and wonder what turned you onto the Saints and how you became so knowledgable so quickly. You are already a legend!
