Milestone 30,360

Once again, I was caught slightly off guard by the latest 10,000 page hit milestone.  My recent post summarizing Football Manager’s view of Premier League salaries was surprisingly popular and more people than normal are checking out links I post in other threads on Saints Web.

I think I understand the pattern now.  My blog is more interesting during transfer windows than it is during the rest of the season.  And people like it when I summarize information from Football Manager even though many of them complain that it is just a game.

Nevertheless, I want to thank everyone who has read my blog more than once.  If it weren’t for all of you I would definitely have fewer page hits.

I had started work on an End of Season Potpourri post addressing a lot of little minor things.  After partially writing it, I lost interest when the FIFA indictment became big news.  However, a few parts of it still interest me and I will include them.

My Program Collection

I decided to support Southampton FC and add to my ability to read about Southampton FC by subscribing, at a relatively high cost, to the year’s collection of home programs.  (Are they called programs in England or is there some other word for them?)  The club happily (I assume) shipped each program to me following the game and I enjoyed reading them all.  Unfortunately, the program for the Stoke game never arrived.  I contacted the club on the official website twice and never heard back.  I am a little annoyed that I do not have a complete collection.  Can anyone suggest how I can get my Stoke program?  I am willing to pay for it.

It Is Not You It Is Us

Since I am not from Newcastle, I never really understood the intense hatred the Newcastle fans have for Alan Pardew.  However, I think the following records are worth noting:

Club One is Newcastle and Crystal Palace without Alan Pardew as their manager.  Club Two is Crystal Palace and Newcastle the rest of the time.  The without-Pardew club would have been relegated in last place.  The with-Pardew club was nearly as good as Southampton.

Sure, the other two managers may not have been very good, but no one seriously believes that either Newcastle or Crystal Palace as really as good as Southampton or slightly better than Swansea, yet those are the results Pardew achieved.

To me, this suggests that the problems in Newcastle were not caused by Alan Pardew, but by the ownership of the club.  Of course, this is much less of an insight now then it was earlier in the season when the Newcastle fans were trying to get Alan Pardew fired apparently not realizing that he would be replaced, effectively, with no one.  However, it does cast doubt on how real any turn around can be at Newcastle.  If I were a Newcastle fan, I would not be holding my breath.

If I had had a vote for manager of the year I would have voted for Pardew over Koeman, Monk, and Mourinho, in that order.  (In fact, I think that both Koeman and Mourinho slightly underachieved what their respective squads were capable of.)

Premier League Salaries According to Football Manager 2015

There has been a lot of discussion on the Saints Web forum recently about whether Clyne, Alderweireld, and Schneiderlin would be moving up by transferring to another club.  There have also been discussions as to whether Charlie Austen should go to Newcastle or Southampton.  While much of that analysis is pointlessly subjective, one issue is not:  which club pays more?

I do not have inside information about the pay structure of various clubs.  However, I do have a willingness to crib data from Football Manager (FM).  I have previously posted FM information about Southampton’s salaries.  In fact, my February post on that subject is my most viewed post for the past month.  Therefore, as a combination of public service and to make the information easily available to me in the future, I am posting FM salary information for the entire Premier League.

As I stated in my Southampton salary posts, I have no idea how accurate these figures are and they do not take into account performance, appearance, and other bonuses.  On the other hand, last summer when I was considering Financial Fair Play issues FM’s base salaries fairly closely corresponded to the information released by Southampton for its players’ salaries as a whole.  If nothing else, this information provides a basis for comparison.

I have listed the top 20 weekly salaries for each club.  All numbers are in thousands of pounds per week so I do not have to repeatedly type the “£” sign which is a pain in the neck for me on my American computer.  These numbers are taken from the final FM 2015 database which was set at the end of the January 2015 transfer window.  No subsequent transactions are accounted for including contract extensions and transfers.

The clubs are listed in order of their finish this year.  If I have spelled any names wrong it is because I cannot read my own handwriting.  Long names have been arbitrarily shortened—well, actually just Oxlade-Chamberlin.  Some players may appear on two lists due to loans—Aaron Lennon, for example—but the numbers do not always match, presumably because the parent club is paying part of the salary.

And, yes, I realize it would be nice if I learned how to make tables using HTML.  I do not think it is going to happen.
